DESPITE IT BEING JARRINGLY SENTIMENTAL TO YOU, IT BRINGS BACK JOYFUL MEMORIES FOR ME AS I AM BUT A FEW YEARS YOUNGER THAN BARRY AND IT IS SO FULL OF BLISSFUL MEMORIES OF POST WAR MELBOURNE. I HAVE MOVED BACK IN SENIOR YEARS TO CAMBERWELL AFTER WORKING AS A GP FOR 50 YEARS SO THAT DURING COVID LOCKDOWN WATTLE PARK AGAIN BECAME A HAVEN FOR ME. I HAVE FORWARDED A COPY TO MY OLDER BROTHER IN QUEENSLAND.
WE SPENT SO MANY WONDERFUL SHARED TIMES THERE AS KIDS WHEN MY DAD WOULD GIVE US EACH 3 PENCE TO BUY SWEETS WHILE MUM AND DAD HAD THEIR SCONES AND CREAM! In the order of service there's another poem called Song of Australia that amused me. I don't know if you saw it. Every line was layer upon layer of poignant memories. My Great grandparents were caterers in the Chalet and we visited often. Wattle Park was our childhood haunt.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-23278986595869007012023-12-15T21:26:57.355+01:002023-12-15T21:26:57.355+01:00Thank you Ruth ZMKCThank you Ruth ZMKCAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-55644855562016725302023-12-15T21:26:26.890+01:002023-12-15T21:26:26.890+01:00Wonderful memories. We'd catch tadpoles, and were only instructed by our parents (in our faux-Tudor house in Surrey Hills) to be 'home for tea'. Nostalgic, yes, but they were simpler more innocent days: the biggest outrage was kids smoking cigarettes. I don't think the poem is that bad either, some cynicism on display there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-12179278473139085742023-12-15T02:12:36.471+01:002023-12-15T02:12:36.471+01:00Grew up in Burwood nearby. My mother is Australian - from Victoria - and my father was English and we didn't live in Australia when we were children but would come over a lot, and some of the time we'd stay with cousins in Melbourne. In the 60s it seemed to me that Melbourne still had a very calm, dull but oddly pleasant feel - it seemed quite a gentle (maybe genteel?) world where the only thing that anyone did that was even faintly remarkable that I can recall - and everyone did remark on it - was that one aunt wore a hat indoors. Going to Wattle Park brought that world back for me a bit.zmkchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08972549292961948240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-82157799299104573872013-08-05T12:49:51.549+02:002013-08-05T12:49:51.549+02:00Oh, such a lovely post, I have had to break throug...Oh, such a lovely post, I have had to break through the pain barrier of commenting. Wattle Park was a big picnic spot and Sunday afternoon with Dad place for our family from the wattled fifties onwards. We travelled by tram, too. And, later, 21sts at the Chalet, and then wedding receptions. I have taken all the members of the next generation there at various times. For old times sake.

A visit to Wattle Park features in one of the Sandy Stone monologues, Can You Keep a Secret? Sandy and Beryl - plus picnic - take the visiting kiddies Wayne and Marilyn there for an outing one Good Friday.

Loved reading this, and the photos, and just the fact that you made the journey. From the poem.

Rosie L.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-29331117752458816152013-07-31T05:25:04.759+02:002013-07-31T05:25:04.759+02:00It is, but I'd still bet that the sign was jus...It is, but I'd still bet that the sign was just a mistake.zmkchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08972549292961948240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4905080602885676490.post-19327369546516592092013-07-30T22:17:30.549+02:002013-07-30T22:17:30.549+02:00According to a couple of online dictionaries I'...According to a couple of online dictionaries I've just checked, 'remenant' is indeed an obsolete spelling of 'remnant.' The Miriam-Webster page for 'remnant' claims that it is actually a contraction of the other word.

"Middle English, contraction of remenant, from Anglo-French remanant, from present participle of remaindre to remain

First Known Use: 14th century"

So that's interesting.Umbagollahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14556344092820711893noreply@blogger.com
