Exclusive

When you discover a restaurant, hotel or entire region that bowls you over with its wonderfulness, it is difficult to know whether to shout its praises from the rooftops or to curb your enthusiasm and keep the pleasure secret. In that context, I was amused by this recent letter to the Spectator.

  1. That is exactly how I feel. I have a list of magical places that I will never share, in case the Chinese tourists get wind of them. I'll never understand those self-defeating guides that list all the "authentic" bars where the locals "hang out" - presumably those locals will swiftly move on once the Lonely Planet brigade arrive.

    1. One of my daughters told me that a really unexciting not terribly pretty town in England couldn't understand why coachloads of Chinese suddenly started turning up on a daily basis and wandering around. Then they discovered that some Chinese blogger had named the town the most typical of all British towns - not the prettiest or most interesting, just the most typical - and it was that that was attracting all the visitors.
