There is always something new to discover in London. This is the Buxton Memorial, built to commemorate the emancipation of slaves following the 1833 Slavery Act. It was originally in Parliament Square but, puzzlingly, in 1957 it was moved to a place where hardly anyone sees it - Victoria Tower Gardens. The move was timed to mark the anniversary of the 1807 act that abolished the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
It seems a mistake that this monument commemorating Britain's leadership in abolishing the slave trade has been hidden away.
