Mysteries of Publishing

On the new acquisitions table at the State Library of Victoria yesterday, I saw this:

  1. At 12 or 13 I would have borrowed such a book. My eyesight was no longer 20/20, and I knew that the US would not accept me as a pilot, but I could imagine serving as a flight engineer. There must be relatively few flight engineers left by now, and it would be a bit late for me to take up the trade even if it were booming. Still, I can imagine circumstances in which I might read it.

    1. On my way to the State Library I pass a place where you can go in a flight simulator and in fact you can even go a long way to getting your pilot's license. When I realised that's what the place was today, I was filled with dread. The idea of taking responsibility for a planeful of passengers is the stuff of nightmares for me. One of the most frightening things I can imagine. If I ever see it on sale, I'll buy the book for you and bring it as a present next time I'm over your way.

  2. Why are these sorts of books always by someone called Brian?

Why do the covers of self-published books frequently have a font in italics?

    It's a mystery.

    1. I am going over there now to check if it's self-published. That would explain a lot.
